Gippsland Water has successfully completed a project to improve the security of water supplies to Traralgon and Tyers in Victoria.
The new, 900m long raw water main replaces aging sections of pipe in the vicinity of the Tyers River Pump Station at Wirilda Park.
The two pipes that were replaced were built in 1969 and 1949 and had reached the end of their expected life.
The new water main carries raw water from the Moondarra Reservoir, under the Tyers River, to a point where two separate pipes branch off to supply the water treatment plants at Traralgon and Tyers.
Gippsland Water’s General Manager Customer and Community, Paul Clark, said that the new pipe is a vital piece of infrastructure for the industry.
“We’re proud to support the economy and liveability of our region by investing in projects that improve the reliability of our network. Being local ourselves we understand the importance of a safe and reliable water supply for our towns and businesses,” Mr Clark said.
The project was successfully completed and commissioned ahead of time and within budget, and there were no safety or environmental incidents during construction.
Gippsland Water conducted an extensive cultural heritage salvage along the banks of the Tyers River prior to starting work, along with thorough biological monitoring and water quality monitoring at the site.
