Barwon Water’s longstanding Chair, Jo Plummer, has stepped down, and the utility has unveiled it’s new chair and welcomed three new directors to its board.

After two years as Deputy Chair, Peta Maddy has been appointed to lead the new-look Board as Chair.

Ms Maddy has been on the Barwon Water board since 2021, serving as the Deputy Chair and the Chair of Barwon Asset Solutions since early 2024.

She has nearly 30 years’ experience in water and natural resources industries, including a stint as president of the Victorian branch of the Australian Water Association.

Ms Maddy steps into the top role following the departure of Ms Plummer, who led the Barwon Water Group as Chair from October 2015.

Kate Griffiths, John Mitchell and Madeline Oldfield have also joined the board, which comprises nine non-executive directors and Managing Director Shaun Cumming.

They replace Ann Lansberry (eight years) and Nik Devidas (four years), who have completed their service.

Ms Maddy said she was honoured to lead the Board as it focused on identifying sustainable ways to deliver long-term water security to a growing region.

“It’s been an honour to work alongside Jo over the past few years,” Ms Maddy said.

“Jo was instrumental in shaping Barwon Water into an organisation that placed the customer and community at the heart of what it did.

“Over the past decade, we’ve made great progress on our long-term aims to provide affordability, water security, care for the environment and reliable services.”

Ms Maddy also acknowledged the outstanding contributions of the other outgoing directors, who had overseen a crucial period of transformation and innovation.

“Ann and Nik have been instrumental in the development and growth of the organisation, and we thank them for their dedication and expertise. “

She welcomed the new directors’ experience and perspectives, which would be highly valuable as the organisation prepares for its next major future-focused plan, Strategy 2040.

Announcing her departure on LinkedIn, Ms Plummer said she was profoundly grateful for the extraordinary opportunities she had been afforded to connect across the region and industry, and ultimately contributing to Barwon Water’s shared vision to enable regional prosperity.

“The privilege of serving alongside such dedicated professionals has been transformational, allowing me to witness firsthand the remarkable impact that can be created together in our communities and throughout the water sector,” she said.

“Together, we have championed numerous groundbreaking initiatives that have fundamentally enhanced our organisation, strengthened our region, and advanced the water industry.

“I am deeply humbled by the exceptional learning and professional development experiences that have allowed me to expand my skills and capabilities throughout this journey. From boardroom discussions to operational insights, I have gained invaluable knowledge from all parts of our organisation, recognising that the Barwon Water Group team truly represents the industry’s finest – a distinction validated by our Essential Service Commission and Human Synergistics ratings.

“The remarkable cultural transformation we have achieved reflects each individual’s genuine commitment to making a meaningful difference, moving beyond good intentions to purposeful action while thoughtfully reflecting on our methods and motivations.

“From embracing First Nations cultural values with authenticity and respect to demonstrating strategic excellence in delivering major capital programs, we have consistently approached challenges with curiosity, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement.”

Ms Plummer extended her heartfelt appreciation to her fellow directors and executives for graciously allowing her to explore emerging ideas – which she fondly dubbed “unformed thoughts” – and for demonstrating the strategic courage to rise magnificently when circumstances demanded the very best.

“I am immensely proud of our collaborative spirit and treasure the incredible professional friendships, associations, and networks I carry forward,” she said.

“I wish each of you continued success and encourage you to persist in inspiring others while aspiring to reach your fullest potential.

“Always a friend of Barwon Water Group and its exceptional team.”
