The Barwon Heads sewer project has been completed on schedule, with Barwon Water’s new pipeline now moving sewage from Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff to the Black Rock Water Reclamation Plant in Breamlea.
Barwon Water Managing Director, Shaun Cumming, thanked the local community for its understanding while the essential works were carried out.
“We appreciate the construction work and rolling traffic changes provided inconvenience, so we’re grateful for your support,” Mr Cumming said.
“This critical project ensures we can continue to provide high-quality, affordable and secure wastewater services to the coastal communities.”
The upgrade of the sewer pipeline – between the Barwon River and Barwon Heads pump station – was required after a sewer leak in 2021.
To ensure there was no disruption to the network during construction, a temporary sewerage pipeline, known as a bypass, was installed.
Vegetation removal was avoided in the Village Park by weaving the bypass through the Village Park walking paths.
The sewer pipeline replacement was conducted in two stages, using a process called ‘lift and relay’.
‘Lift and relay’ refers to when part of an old pipe is dug out and removed, and a new pipe is laid in similar positions.
Barwon Water said it will continue to reinstate and maintain the work site over the coming months, while new grass establishes in the impacted areas.
This includes a new John Firth Memorial Garden, which has been designed in consultation with the Firth Family.
