Bega Group has commissioned a new wastewater pre-treatment plant at its Lenah Valley site in Tasmania, marking a major investment in improving the quality of water released from the facility.
The leading Australian food producer that owns and distributes some of the country’s most popular dairy, juice and condiment products, also has a network of dairy farm suppliers and food processing plants in key areas.
The upgrade in Tasmania is designed to improve the consistency of treated wastewater quality while reducing the site’s environmental impact on local water infrastructure.
It also ensures the facility continues to operate in line with regulatory requirements and community expectations.
Now fully operational, the new system treats water generated from cleaning activities by separating wastewater streams without the use of chemicals or biological processes. The process delivers consistently high-quality water before it is released into the network, representing a significant shift in wastewater management at the Lenah Valley facility and supporting more sustainable manufacturing practices.
The project was delivered following more than a year of planning, on-site trials, detailed design, construction and commissioning. Bega Group worked closely with external partners and TasWater throughout the project, with the utility playing a key role in bringing the upgrade to completion.
The Lenah Valley team recently celebrated the milestone with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by senior leaders involved in the project.
“This investment strengthens our long-term capability, improves the quality of water leaving the site, and reflects our ongoing commitment to responsible manufacturing and environmental stewardship in the communities where we operate,” Bega Group Group Manager – Environmental, Caro Arango, said.
The Lenah Valley site plays an important role in Bega Group’s Tasmanian operations, producing products made in Tasmania for local consumers. By enhancing its on-site wastewater treatment capabilities, the investment reinforces the company’s commitment to responsible local manufacturing while delivering environmental benefits for Hobart and the broader Tasmanian community.
“Bega’s investment in its pre-treatment is an important and necessary step to ensure waste entering the system meets the required standards before it reaches our Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant,” TasWater Head of Commercial and Industrial Services, Matt Whittle, said.
