Construction is underway on the North Pine Dam Staged Strengthening project, the beginning of a landmark upgrade to enhance safety and secure the future of one of southeast Queensland’s drinking water supply assets.
“We’re investing in our region’s dams to help secure southeast Queensland’s water future, ensuring our infrastructure continues to serve communities safely and reliably for decades to come,” said Seqwater Executive General Manager Infrastructure Planning and Capital Delivery, Sarah Dixon.
“North Pine Dam plays an important role in the SEQ Water Grid and supplies drinking water to the people of north Brisbane and Moreton Bay.”
Specialist contractor SRG Global Civil began precision drilling through the dam wall in November to commence installing 55 post-tensioned anchors.
The anchors will provide around 75,000 tonnes of effective weight to the dam wall, boosting its structural integrity to ensure it continues to perform safely during extreme weather events.
Ranging from 39 to 101m in length, the anchors are being installed vertically from the dam crest into the foundation rock, with the project using almost 246km of high-tensile steel strand.
“While the dam has operated safely since it was built in 1976, the major upgrade planned for the future will ensure it meets modern engineering and design standards which have evolved since the dam was originally constructed,” said Dixon.
The staged strengthening work is supporting approximately 50 jobs on-site and is expected to continue into late 2026, weather and site conditions permitting.
