Essential Energy has achieved its three-year accredited certification to ISO 55001 for its Asset Management System, with the utility receiving the accredited certification with no major or minor nonconformities.

ISO 55001 is the international standard which defines the requirements for developing, implementing and maintaining a management system for asset management.

To achieve accredited certification to ISO 55001 Essential Energy had to demonstrate both implementing an Asset Management System, and also how the system is used to help make the best decisions.

Essential Energy Chief Operating Officer, Luke Jenner, said, “The energy industry is experiencing rapid and sustained change in both use and availability of technology and the ways in which our customers demand, and wish to use energy.

“In anticipating this, asset intensive businesses like ours need an asset management system to provide the coordinated customer-centric asset management activity required.

“This will ensure our network remains valuable to our customers and other important stakeholders. It’s been a rewarding journey to get external recognition through accredited ISO 55001 certification supporting the way we do asset management.”

Mr Jenner said that with over 183,000km of overhead powerlines and all the interconnecting pieces, it is a big job to manage the assets that serve Essential Energy’s more than 880,000 plus customers across regional New South Wales and parts of Southern Queensland.

“As an electricity network, Essential Energy is responsible for ensuring the services we deliver meet the needs and expectations of our customers, industry, and stakeholders both today and well into the future,” Mr Jenner said.

“With our network existing in a variety of climates ranging from arid to alpine and everything in between, ensuring the safe operation of our assets while realising value from them for our customers means we need a robust system to manage the full lifecycle of our assets.”

This is a significant achievement for Essential Energy and better asset management outcomes will continue to provide all customers with a safe, reliable, and affordable energy distribution network.
