The Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline (FGP) has achieved an ‘Excellent’ Design rating from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC), recognising the project’s strong commitment to sustainability during the design phase.
The rating highlights best-practice outcomes across areas such as stakeholder engagement, resource efficiency, environmental protection and emissions reduction.
Gladstone Area Water Board (GAWB) Chief Executive Officer, Darren Barlow, said the rating was a proud moment for the $983 million Queensland Government-funded project.
“Achieving an ‘Excellent’ rating is a significant milestone for the project and is the result of a genuine team effort,” Mr Barlow said.
“It reflects our commitment to delivering long-term water security for Gladstone in a way that also supports environmental protection, sustainability and strong community partnerships.
“We worked closely with our principal contractor, McConnell Dowell BMD Joint Venture, and design consultants to embed sustainability principles throughout the project’s planning and design stages.”
Mr Barlow said GAWB is now focused on achieving an ‘Excellent’ rating for the delivery phase of the project.
“We’re not stopping here. We’re working hard to ensure the infrastructure is delivered to the same high standard we set during design,” he said.
The 117km pipeline will run from the Fitzroy River near Rockhampton to GAWB’s water network at Yarwun. Once complete, the FGP will become part of the GAWB network and it will help reduce Gladstone’s reliance on Awoonga Dam and strengthen long-term regional water security.
The project has already delivered strong outcomes for Central Queensland, including more than $142 million in local supplier spend and the registration of an Indigenous Land Use Agreement with the Darumbal People Aboriginal Corporation.
Gladstone Area Water Board (GAWB), as a Queensland Government Bulk Water Supply Authority, delivers safe and reliable water services which promote economic development and enhance the lifestyle of regional Queensland.
GAWB owns and operates Awoonga Dam, along with a network of pipelines, water treatment plants and other distribution infrastructure. GAWB also owns and operates Aquaculture Gladstone, a fish hatchery and interpretive display at Lookout One at Lake Awoonga.
