FTTN upgrades for Noosa region

Warren Truss, Federal Member for Wide Bay (QLD) and Deputy Prime Minister has announced that the Noosa region will benefit from expanded access to high speed broadband internet, thanks to its inclusion in the latest 18 month rollout plan for NBN Co’s new Fibre to the Node (FTTN) network.

“The Noosa region has been included in the NBN Co’s rollout plan, as one of several areas scheduled for FTTN upgrades by September 2016. This plan now includes 22,100 premises in the Cooroibah, Doonan, Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Sunrise Beach, Sunshine Beach, Tewantin, Tinbeerwah and Castaways Beach areas,” Mr Truss said.

Mr Truss said that the expansion of the NBN rollout plan to include Noosa would be particularly appreciated because of the unavailability of ADSL 2+ ports in local telephone exchanges.

“While I will continue to press telecommunications companies to upgrade their services in the region, the arrival of high speed broadband will be an excellent solution for many people waiting for broadband connections.

“Fibre to the Node technology is likely to use vectored VDSL technology to radically increase the speed and quality of broadband internet services.

“This technology has the potential to deliver download speeds many times faster than the average fixed line broadband currently available to Australian households.

“As a point of comparison, the improved bandwidth available through these upgrades will allow a single premises to stream multiple high definition videos simultaneously.”

“Under the Coalition Government the pace of the NBN rollout has dramatically improved, through technologies including cable broadband, fibre to the node, fixed wireless and satellite, which allow the delivery of better and cheaper broadband services to consumers more quickly,” Mr Truss said.

“The NBN forward construction plan demonstrates our commitment to rural and regional Australia. Of the households and businesses receiving the fixed-line rollout in Queensland over the next 18 months, more than 80,000 of these connections will be delivered in regional areas that are outside of the greater Brisbane metropolitan area.”

Construction is expected to commence on the upgrades within the next 18 months, and NBN Co will notify residents when the upgrades are completed and services become available.
