A project to harness hydroelectricity from Melbourne’s water supply has been named a finalist in the 2018 Banksia Sustainability Awards.
Project overseer Eamonn Kelly, Melbourne Water’s General Manager Major Program Delivery, welcomed the nomination.
“Innovation and collaboration are at the cornerstones of everything we do as a business,” Mr Kelly said.
“Sustainability is a core focus for Melbourne Water and we are delighted to have been named finalist for the 2018 Banksia Sustainability Awards.”
The technology generates electricity by transferring water from high-elevation major storage reservoirs to lower-elevation smaller service reservoirs predominantly via gravity.
Following completion of the ‘Making Every Drop Count’ project, Melbourne Water has 14 hydro-electric plants — equivalent to powering more than 14,100 homes.
The Banksia Sustainability Awards aim to raise the profile of current sustainability issues facing Australia and recognise organisations who have developed initiatives to address these issues.
The 2018 Banksia Sustainability Awards will be held on the 29 November at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
