In today’s fast-paced tech world, staying ahead in facility and asset management means embracing innovation.

Programmed Facility Management is revolutionising this field with Chorus, a key player in New Zealand’s telecom sector. This partnership showcases how technology can optimise infrastructure management.

Tasked with managing a vast network of telecom assets, Chorus faced the challenge of transitioning from 1950s copper networks to modern fibre optics. The company needed a comprehensive ten-year plan to phase out outdated systems and optimise infrastructure within budget constraints.

Programmed Facility Management introduced 3D mapping technology, a game-changer in the industry. This technology created virtual twins of Chorus’ facilities using high-resolution images from drones and specialised cameras. Combined with IoT sensors, it provided detailed insights into asset conditions and performance, empowering Chorus with unprecedented knowledge.

Chorus now has digital maps of all critical infrastructure, which allows it to prioritise maintenance based on risk rather than a fixed schedule. This approach has reduced costs, minimised asset failure risks, and optimised maintenance schedules. The success of this project highlights the power of accessible advanced technology in facility management, setting a new standard for the industry.

For facility and asset management professionals, the lessons from Chorus’ journey offer valuable insights into the future of maintenance and operational efficiency. Widening access to technology and leveraging data-driven approaches can pave the way for more resilient and cost-effective infrastructure management.
