Governor Hieu Van Le has officially appointed a lead for the Murray-Darling Basin Royal Commission.
Bret Walker SC has been appointed and will have the discretion to release interim reports as he sees fit.
Minister for Water and the River Murray, Ian Hunter, said, “Just this month, an Ernst & Young report found delivering the Murray-Darling Basin Plan in full is not only possible, but would deliver positive socio-economic benefits for communities, farms and businesses that rely on the river system.
“An independent, rigorous Royal Commission will deliver the answers we need and importantly do so in a timely manner.”
The final Terms of Reference have been formally gazetted for the investigation into widespread allegations upstream irrigators have been stealing water from the Murray-Darling River system.
The final report will be due by 1 February 2019.
