A major gas leak in Oakleigh South caused dozens of people to be evacuated from the area on Tuesday 8 January, with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) using water to disperse the gas safely and avoid an explosion.
The leak occurred when earthmoving equipment broke a 50mm high pressure gas line while digging a trench. The line was later turned off by the gas company while fire crews assessed the situation.
Residents and workers were later able to return to houses and commercial buildings on Valley Street and Haughton Road after the MFB announced that power had been isolated, and crews had used air monitoring equipment to assess air quality.
