Commissioning of the newly constructed Marian South zone Substation (QLD) will soon begin, and will power the Marian township and surrounding districts with an improved power supply.
Customer Delivery Manager, Chester Brodie, said the newly constructed $16.6 million facility will improve quality and reliability of supply to 621 customers in the area and meet the present and future supply requirements of the Marian Sugar Mill, township and surrounding rural district.
Construction on the project commenced in April this year, and was completed in September. Testing is currently underway and final commissioning and energisation is scheduled for mid-November.
The substation project comprised three sub projects namely the substation itself, connection of the primary high voltage supply to the substation and connection of three outgoing high voltage feeders – two to the township and surrounding areas and one to the Marian Sugar Mill.
Mr Brodie said the new 66/11kV substation has been established on the outskirts of the township of Marian on a new substation site. The new site is located just to the south of the township of Marian on the Marian – Eton Road and next to the existing tee-off from the Pioneer Valley – Pinnacle 66kV Feeder which supplies the Marian 66/11kV zone substation. The new substation will be supplied from this same tee-off.
The project also allows for decommissioning and demolition of the existing substation which was constructed back in 1964 in close proximity to the Mill.
It is believed the new substation site offers a more secure and safe site away from potential debris, vehicle and equipment impacts associated with the close proximity of the existing locationto the Mill.
Mr Brodie said Ergon was looking forward to providing the benefits of the new substation project to the community.
Construction of the new Marian substation project has been completed and is scheduled to come on line mid -November.
