Banyule residents will soon have access to the most detailed stormwater flood mapping ever produced for the municipality, with new interactive flood maps set to be released by Melbourne Water in mid-June 2026.
The updated maps will allow residents to search their property address and view flood hazard information specific to their location, providing a more detailed understanding of potential flood risks under both current climate conditions and projected future scenarios through to 2100.
Melbourne Water said the maps are based on new, best-practice modelling and use national flood hazard classifications to provide more accurate and property-specific information than previous mapping.
The updated data reflects changes in land use and development across Banyule, as well as the impacts of a changing climate on stormwater flooding.
Melbourne Water Executive General Manager Service Futures Chris Brace said the new maps would help residents make informed decisions about their properties while supporting long-term flood management planning.
“These new flood maps give residents clearer information so they can plan with confidence,” Brace said.
“We’re also continuing to invest in the infrastructure to reduce flood impacts across Melbourne over time, and having accurate, up-to-date mapping is a critical part of that work.”
Following the release, Melbourne Water will hold a series of community engagement sessions across Banyule, giving residents the opportunity to learn more about the maps, understand what they mean for their property and provide local feedback that may help refine the final mapping.
Banyule Mayor Cr Alison Champion said access to reliable flood information would help strengthen community preparedness.
“Clear, reliable flood information helps our community plan ahead and make informed decisions about their homes and businesses,” Champion said.
“We trust the release of the new flood maps will support effective planning and stronger preparedness.”
The Banyule maps form part of Melbourne Water’s Greater Melbourne Flood Information Program, which aims to deliver updated stormwater flood mapping across 38 council areas.
New flood maps have already been released for the municipalities of Darebin, Yarra, Glen Eira and Merri-bek, with further mapping work continuing across Melbourne.
Melbourne Water is also undertaking work to update riverine flood models across Banyule as part of its broader flood risk management program.
