A 326t transformer has been delivered to Powerlink’s Greenbank Substation for its latest grid-scale battery connection project.
The transformer was transported just over 61km from Port Brisbane to Greenbank overnight on two 12-axle trailers.
It was pushed and pulled by two prime movers on a total of 232 wheels.
The transformer’s total operational weight is 326t – the equivalent of roughly eight Boeing 737 jets – and is 10.1m long, 4.5m wide and 4.4m high.
The transformer’s role is to convert high voltage electricity to a lower voltage to charge the battery, then also send onto customers across South-East Queensland
The Greenbank Substation site was chosen for its strategic location on Powerlink’s transmission network. A battery at this location will allow Powerlink to increase the network capability by ensuring a reliable supply of high voltage electricity is maintained to South East Queensland.
