The NBN Co Board has announced the appointment of Ellie Sweeney as its new CEO, who will commence the role in December 2024.

Ms Sweeney will lead the company as it builds, operates and upgrades the national broadband network. This appointment comes at a pivotal time for nbn as it continues to lift the digital capability of Australia through significant network investments.

Ms Sweeney will join the company from Vocus, where she has served as both CEO and COO.

The NBN Co Board engaged an executive search firm to undertake an extensive search and Chair, Kate McKenzie, congratulated Ms Sweeney on her appointment.

Ms McKenzie, said, “I am delighted to announce Ellie as nbn’s new CEO. She brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the telecommunications landscape, and will continue to deliver on our ambition to ensure that homes and businesses have access to world-class broadband – empowering people; delivering for customers, valued partners and stakeholders; and continuing to foster the strong culture of nbn.

“The Board considered Ellie’s experience, including a proven track record of strategic leadership, driving innovation, a passion for digital inclusion and a commitment to making a meaningful impact on communities, together with a deep alignment with nbn’s vision of connecting Australia and supporting the digital economy, to be especially well-suited to the challenge.

“NBN Co is committed to continuing its journey of growth and transformation, and our ambition of becoming a brilliant wholesaler, enabling Australia’s digital future.”

Ms Sweeney said that she felt very honoured to take on the role as CEO and was inspired by a genuine passion for the company’s purpose of lifting the digital capability of Australia.

“What drew me to nbn is the company’s commitment to transforming lives through connectivity and I am excited to lead an organisation that is dedicated to ensuring that every Australian, no matter where they live, has access to fast, high-quality, reliable internet,” Ms Sweeney said.

“nbn doesn’t just build the infrastructure; the company is building the future of Australia. My passion for the nbn purpose stems from a belief that enhanced connectivity drives progress and prosperity. I look forward to leading the company’s ongoing efforts to create a more connected and digitally capable Australia.

“My vision for our future is rooted in the conviction that by expanding and enhancing our digital infrastructure and technology, we can drive meaningful change and ensure that all Australians can thrive.”

Ms McKenzie expressed her gratitude and thanks to Philip Knox, NBN Co Interim CEO and CFO, for his exceptional leadership during this transition period.

“Philip is providing steadfast guidance, and his dedication and commitment is exceptional. I sincerely thank him,” Ms McKenzie said.
