Downer has appointed Phil Thompson as its new General Manager Water, who will help shape the next chapter of the company’s water operations in New South Wales.

Mr Thompson will have oversight of Downer’s New South Wales-based contracts, driving ongoing growth and innovative solutions for new and existing customers. He will also lead Downer’s multi-disciplinary engineering team across Australia and New Zealand.

Downer Executive General Manager Water, Neal Firth, said he was thrilled to welcome Mr Thompson to the Downer team.

“With more than 40 years in the water industry, Phil brings deep operational insight and proven leadership to our leadership team,” he said.

“Phil will play a key role in delivering more innovative, customer-focused solutions that raise the bar for performance, sustainability, and service.”

Mr Thompson’s previous roles include senior executive positions at BHP/Tubemakers, Founder and Managing Director of a water and wastewater renewal business (now owned by Interflow), Executive Member at South East Water, Bid/Merger Director at Comdain / Service Stream and CEO of reactive infrastructure maintenance company, TDG Environmental.

Mr Thompson said he was looking forward to making an impact in delivering on Downer’s purpose – enabling communities to thrive.

“For me it is such privilege to play a small part in supporting the communities we serve. Working in water means contributing to something essential, supporting the environment and the wide spectrum of communities that depend and rely on it every day,” he said.

“I am excited for the opportunity to contribute, add value and be part of such a strong and diverse company. Downer is well placed to continue to grow and further strengthen its position in the water sector both in New South Wales and more broadly.”

Downer is one of the largest providers of complete water lifecycle solutions for municipal and industrial water users in Australia and New Zealand, with services spanning the full asset lifecycle, including design, construction, operations and maintenance across water and wastewater treatment, linear networks, process improvement and an industry leader in biosolids treatment.
