SA Water has begun work to install a new 400m water main at Springton in the Barossa Valley, which aims to provide continued drinking water security for the local community.
The new pipe, which is being laid beneath William Street, is part of SA Water’s four-year, $287 million water main management program.
SA Water General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure, Amanda Lewry, said the replacement will install new PVC pipes, which have a lifespan of up to 100 years, and are flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.
“Replacing water pipes which are nearing the end of their operational life with new pipes made of modern materials minimises the potential for leaks and breaks, which can happen due to a variety of reasons such as the condition of the soil, temperature of the ground and water pressure changes,” Ms Lewry said.
“We will be upgrading an essential section of pipe in Springton that transports water to residents and businesses in and around the area, helping to ensure we can continue to provide reliable water services.”
Construction is expected to be completed in early June 2025, with works typically occurring Monday to Friday between 7am and 4pm.
“For the safety of our people and the local community, we ask residents and road users to please take note of localised traffic management in place while the works are underway,” Ms Lewry said.
“Together with our contractors, we’re committed to minimising any impacts to the community during construction, such as dust or noise caused by the use of heavy machinery and increased vehicle movement in and out of our worksite.
“As work progresses, we will also ensure our customers are notified of any temporary water supply interruptions that are necessary when moving connections over from the old to new pipes.”
