The high stress-crack resistance of Alkadyne® HCR193B – Australia’s first pipe resin classified as PE100 HSCR according to PIPA POP016 – opens up the potential to review installation design factors for trenchless installations to address the risk of slow crack growth failure.

Jeroen Wassenaar, Pipe Market Segment Manager at Qenos.

This may allow for fit-for-purpose risk based designs that feature pipes of lower wall thickness, provided the mechanical strength of the pipe is sufficient to withstand the forces working on the pipe during installation
and service life. Such designs will lower project and operational costs by reducing pipe weight per metre and decrease pumping costs as a result of increased hydraulic capacity.

Qenos has now released an Online Benefit Calculator that directly provides pipeline dimensions and mass for PE100 HSCR piping based on inputs such as nominal diameter, maximum allowable operating pressure, and installation technique.

The calculator will compare the “fit for purpose-risk based “ design using PE100 HSCR to “deemed to comply” design with conventional PE100, and translates this into pipeline Design Charts quantifying key benefits such as increased hydraulic capacity, reduced material consumption, and lower carbon footprint.

“Our Online Benefit Calculator provides pipeline design engineers with a rapid insight into the quantitative benefits Alkadyne® HCR193B can deliver over conventional

Mike Stahmer, Pipes Specialty Consultant

PE100 resins in trenchless pipeline installations. It covers a range of applications including potable and irrigation water, domestic and industrial sewerage, gas distribution, and coal seam gas gathering networks”, said Jeroen Wassenaar, Pipe Market Segment Manager at Qenos.

Qenos has developed the tool in collaboration with Pipes Specialty Consultant, Mike Stahmer and well as input from leading PE pipe manufacturers.

“The Design Charts provide engineers/designers with a simplified presentation that quantifies key aspects. These aspects are identified as pipe mass, carbon footprint, hydraulic capacity, allowable tensile load, and critical buckling pressure. Comparisons are made in each case against “standard” PE100, thus clearly displaying attributes that can be converted into cost savings and other benefits, such as environmental,” Mr Stahmer said.

You can now access the Qenos the PE100 HSCR Design Calculator on https://alkadyne.com.au/pe100-hscr-benefit-calculator/.

Utility is the title of choice for decision makers at all levels of water and energy utilities, as well as other major players like consulting engineers and first-tier contractors. Utility is integrated across print and online, and explores the biggest news and issues across the utility industry. It is Australia’s only dedicated utility magazine, and covers all areas of the utility sector, including water and sewer, gas, electricity, communications and the NBN.
