An $11 million project involving the replacement of essential components of the high voltage electricity network in Brisbane’s southside has been completed.
The Powerlink project involved refitting 42 transmission towers along 12km of line between Powerlink’s Algester, Runcorn and Belmont substations.
The project will ensure the supply of high voltage electricity in a safe, reliable and cost-effective way.
Energy Minister, Mark Bailey, said, “The project supported 39 jobs and demonstrated Powerlink’s ability to safely and efficiently maintain the performance of the transmission network.
“Powerlink plays an important role in powering the state’s economy, being responsible for the reliable supply of electricity to more than four million Queenslanders.
“These transmission lines were built in 1971. With refit work now completed, they will continue to reliably power the southern Brisbane metropolitan area well into the future.”
Powerlink Chief Executive, Merryn York, said specialist crews strengthened tower foundations, replaced corroded bolts and steelwork, cleaned and hand-painted towers, and restored anti-climbing barriers.
“The project’s smooth delivery also highlights Powerlink’s ability to implement customised engineering solutions in high-density urban areas,” Ms York said.
“We successfully refitted towers located in residential areas, near busy major roads including the Pacific Motorway, Logan Road and Pinelands Road, and in public spaces such as the Bulimba Creek Bikeway.”
