An energy utility has won two awards, for Project of the Year and Construction and Engineering, at the 2022 New South Wales Project Management Achievement Awards in Sydney.
The awards, run by the Australian Institute of Project Management, recognise outstanding achievements in program and project management in NSW.
Transgrid’s Powering Sydney’s Future (PSF) project picked up two major awards at the event; winning the Construction/Engineering category and being named Project of the Year.
The $235 million project delivered the largest 300kV cable project in Australia, to secure electricity supply to more than 800,000 residents and the critical businesses and infrastructure helping to power the nation’s largest economy.
The project has been fast tracked by the New South Wales Government in response to growing peak electricity demand, driven largely by the new infrastructure investment and population growth.
Transgrid Project Director, Colin Mayer, said the double award win is testament to the hard work put in by the project team.
“Delivering this project for the people of Sydney was the culmination of years of work across planning, designing and construction and these awards are in part due to everyone who worked on PSF giving a little more than they thought possible,” Mr Mayer said.
“Well done to everyone who contributed and kept work on track despite the significant challenges posed by the pandemic. This is a great team result and it’s really rewarding to see Transgrid recognised as a leader in project management,” he said.
The PSF project will now go on to compete against other state category winners at the national Project Management Achievement Awards in March 2023.
Construction on the PSF project began in August 2020 and included:
- Installing a new 20km 330kV underground cable between Potts Hill and Alexandria
- Upgrading Transgrid substations at Potts Hill, Alexandria and Picnic Point
- Installing additional conduits so there is space for a second cable to be added in the future as demand increases
- Constructing cable bridges for the cable to cross rail corridors
In July 2022 Transgrid marked completion of main construction works for PSF when the new cables and associated infrastructure were activated.
