Bruce Leslie, a Queensland Urban Utilities Board Member, has been awarded a prestigious Doctorate in Engineering from the University of Queensland.

With a career in mechanical engineering spanning more than 36 years, Dr Leslie has undertaken pioneering research into mining excavation, specifically for the construction and use of dragline and mining excavator buckets in Australia.

Mentor and University of Queensland Emeritus, Professor John Simmons, congratulated Dr Leslie on his achievements and contribution to the mining industry.

“Dr Leslie’s investigations and outcomes have contributed to Australia’s global leadership in mining equipment and technology,” Mr Simmons said.

“His work has delivered significant value to the mining industry and has established him as a world expert.”

From 1995 to 2008, Dr Leslie played a leading role in driving a program of research and innovation in mining excavation equipment which led to Australia being an international market leader.

During 2008 to 2017, Dr Leslie shifted his attention to developing remote monitoring equipment for the mining industry.

Appointed to the Queensland Urban Utilities Board on July 1, 2018, his current focus is water and grid-scale renewable energy.

Dr Leslie said he was particularly inspired by the innovation culture at Queensland Urban Utilities.

“Innovation has been a big driver throughout my career and I’m passionate about seeing ideas and research come to life,” Dr Leslie said.

“The innovation program at Queensland Urban Utilities is delivering operational efficiencies, improved safety practices, and enhanced customer and environmental outcomes, and I am really proud to be a part of it.”

Dr Leslie also holds Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Master of Engineering Science degrees from the University of Queensland.
