Water Corporation has hauled an enormous 30t fatberg from its Woodman Point Water Resource Recovery Facility in Munster – the largest recorded fatberg found in the state.
The fatberg was found in Perth’s sewer system during routine maintenance, and Water Corporation’s workers spent two days using an excavator to break up and remove the mass, which has now been taken to the tip.
Fatbergs are large masses of congealed solid waste that clog sewerage systems and are entirely preventable.
These fatbergs are formed when non-flushable items like wipes, personal hygiene products and fats are disposed of incorrectly – either by flushing them down the toilet or via sink drains.
In an interview with the ABC, Water Corporation Treatment and Resource Recovery Head, Rino Trolio, said he’d never seen a fatberg like this before, and warned that fatbergs are occurring more regularly and expects they would rise in prevalence as Perth’s population grows.
He also said it ultimately posed the risk of unwanted sewerage overflowing into the community.
