Significant upgrades to Ballarat’s North Water Reclamation plant have been announced to deliver additional recycled water to irrigate the city’s recreational spaces, with a sum investment of $4.45 million.
The new Integrated Water Management project will upgrade the capacity of the Ballarat North Water Reclamation Plant and recycled water pump station.
Ballarat North Water Reclamation Plant’s capacity will be increased to five million litres daily. The project will also increase recycled water pumping and pipeline supply capacities to Lake Wendouree.
Recycled water will also now irrigate other community green spaces, due to new connections for Wendouree West Recreation Reserve and Victoria Park.
Long term, the project boosts water security, creating new opportunities for future recycled water usage to improve the livability of cities and towns in the area, and reduce the pressure on the city’s water supply.
The project will be delivered jointly by Central Highlands Water, the Victorian Government and the City of Ballarat. The collaborative partnership represents a total investment of $4.45 million, including in-kind support.
All parties have recognised that with the increasing impact of climate change, extreme weather events and a growing Victorian population, that there is a need to do more with less water.
The project will see an increase in Central Highlands Water’s capacity to provide recycled water throughout the year, which will remain particularly important during the summer months.
