The Western Australian Government has commenced work on a $10.8 million project to improve the reliability of the water supply in Geraldton, north of Perth.

A new 10.7km water supply main will be built from a pump station along Edward Road in Meru, connecting to the existing water tank off Chapman Valley Road in Moresby known to locals as the Nanson Road Tank.

The main will improve water supply to Northampton and the northern Geraldton suburbs of Morseby, Waggrakine, Glenfield, Drummond Cove, White Peak and Buller.

The project will be carried out in two stages and is expected to be complete in late 2018.

The first stage of the work will involve constructing the majority of the water main within road reserves along Chapman Valley Road, Webber Road, Fairfax Road, Polo Road and Edward Road. This work will be undertaken by WBHO Infrastructure Pty Ltd, a local Geraldton-based company.

The second stage of the project is expected to begin in October and involves drilling two sections of water main under the Chapman River.

Western Australian Water Minister, Dave Kelly, said the project was part of a broader plan to improve water infrastructure in the state.

“We plan to invest $56.9 million in water and wastewater infrastructure in the Mid-West region in 2018-19 alone.

“These projects will not only improve the water supply and reliability of the area, but go on to support WA jobs and local businesses.”
