SGSP (Australia) Assets Pty Ltd (SGSPAA) – trading as energy asset owner and operator Jemena and engineering and construction services provider Zinfra – has unveiled its Sustainability Report 2024: A Sustainable Transition.

With the Australian energy system in a period of great change, the 2024 report highlights SGSPAA’s continued focus on delivering energy safely, reliably and sustainably, while engaging with customers and stakeholders to understand their future needs.

Jemena Managing Director, David Gillespie, said, “Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions is one important part of our environment, social and governance (ESG), efforts, but we are also very focused on reducing our waste, providing energy security for our customers, and making our workplace safe for employees as well as a place where they feel like they belong.

“We’re also pleased to have been able to work with organisations based in the communities where we operate to provide support for people experiencing disadvantage, as well as supporting Indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory into work-readiness training.”

Some 2024 highlights include:

Climate and nature

  • Signing memorandums of understanding with Optimal Renewable Gas, Sojitz, Solarig and Gwydir Circular economy to assess the feasibility of injecting hydrogen and biomethane into the New South Wales gas network as part of furthering Australia’s renewable gas sector
  • Setting its first greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 30 per cent by 2030 (which focuses on reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions compared to a 2021–22 baseline), and developing a credible plan for how the company will deliver emission reductions via its Climate Transition Plan, which was released in February 2025
  • Reducing the volume of waste generated by 19 per cent

People and safety

  • Decreasing the number of injuries per one million hours worked from 3.3 in 2023 to 2.7 in 2024
  • Decreasing the gender pay gap from 19.4 per cent in 2023 to 18.3 per cent in 2024
  • Focusing on apprentice safety and decreasing the numbers of minor injuries
  • Commencing a series of activities to further improve asset risk management both as part of refreshing the company’s Health and Safety Strategy and following an incident on the Queensland Gas Pipeline

Customers and community

  • Helping support Australian energy security by commencing work to make the Eastern Gas Pipeline bi-directional – which allows it to flexibly deliver gas from the Port Kembla Energy Terminal to customers in New South Wales and Victoria
  • Completing two major programs of customer engagement to develop Jemena’s pricing and services plans for its two regulated networks – Jemena Gas Networks and the Jemena Electricity Network – as well as helping inform its ten-year plans for the future of these networks
  • Investing more than $700,000 through donations, sponsorships and grants to groups supporting people – including to customers experiencing vulnerability – in communities near Jemena’s assets

Awards and acknowledgments

  • Ranking as number eight in the list of Australia’s Top 40 Workplaces to Give Back for its Community Program
  • Recognised as a top 100 Australian Financial Review Graduate Employer
  • Shortlisted for Energy Networks Australia’s Consumer Engagement award
  • Finalist in Australian Financial Review’s Energy Awards for the Malabar Biomethane Injection Plant

Mr Gillespie thanked team members across Jemena and Zinfra for their work in 2024.

“I want to thank everyone across our business for the work they put in across 2024 to deliver these achievements, and thank our customers and other stakeholders for their support.”
