SA Water will invest $13 million in a new pipeline to connect the lower Yorke Peninsula towns of Warooka and Point Turton to its River Murray network. The project will also see a new booster pump station built along the pipeline route, as well as 1.25km of new water mains laid in Point Turton.
The new 38.5km pipeline will join the Peninsula’s existing network at Minlacowie and move water to Warooka, where it will then pass through the local distribution network to supply around 1500 customer connections.
SA Water’s extensive modelling and analysis indicates that the bore field in the Para-Wurlie basin, which is currently the sole source of drinking water for the two towns, has insufficient yield for future needs.
“The new Warooka pipeline will ensure the future security of water supply to residents of the ‘bottom end’ and the many visitors that come to discover its natural beauty,” said Water and the River Murray Minister Ian Hunter.
Regional Development Minister Geoff Brock said, “Regional areas are also benefiting from SA Water investing around $50 million over the next four years to replace 207km of water mains.”
SA Water aims to commence construction before the end of 2017, with customers transitioned to the new water source in mid-2019.
The project is expected to create 26 full time jobs during construction.
The new pipeline will be laid under the road verge where possible and follow a route that includes Harry Butler Road, Hardwicke Bay Road, Yorke Highway, Corny Point Road and White Hut Road.
