Water Corporation has completed work in Serpentine on a $12.5 million project to help upgrade the water supply in the Perth metropolitan area.

The Serpentine Trunk Main is located about 50km from the Perth CBD and was constructed in the mid-1960’s to meet the needs of Perth’s expanding population.

Water Corporation spokesperson, Clare Lugar, said a new 3.8km water pipeline was constructed along Allum Way, Summerfield and Lewis Roads in Serpentine.

“The new pipeline forms part of the Serpentine Trunk Main, which is a critical part of the Integrated Water Supply Scheme as it delivers drinking water from our two dams in Serpentine to homes and businesses across the metropolitan area,” Ms Lugar said.

Ms Lugar said Water Corporation worked closely with local residents to ensure disruption was kept to a minimum and traffic management was in place when required.

“We used trenchless technology where we could to further minimise disruptions, including the construction of the pipeline under the South Western Highway and the Australind railway line. This avoids having to use open excavation which would have resulted in temporary road and rail closures.”

Construction of the new pipeline began in January 2017 and was finished on schedule in June 2017.
