Huon Valley’s Rocky Creek has won the award for best tasting drinking water in the state, following in the footsteps of 2020 winner Rossarden.
Water from across Tasmania was put to the test for the 2021 state final, with Rocky Creek beating out Rossarden, among others, for the title of the Water Industry Operators Association of Australia (WIOA) IXOM Best Tasting Tap Water in Tasmania for 2021.
After winning the Best Tasting Tap Water competition in Tasmania for 2020, water from TasWater’s Rossarden Water Treatment Plant then went onto win the Australian title before taking out the Best Municipal Water in the World in 2021.
TasWater Service Delivery General Manager, David Hughes-Owen, said it was a great result for the Huon Valley team, especially that water from Rocky Creek has won the state award.
“Although I have not tasted the water myself, given I am based in Northern Tasmania, I have heard that it is soft on the palate and refreshing,” Mr Hughes-Owen said.
The Rocky Creek Water Treatment Plant was built under the 24glasses Regional Towns Water Supply Program in 2018.
Prior to that water from the area, at times, was subject to boil water alerts.
“It’s great to see a town, which was once subject to boil water alerts, now has a state-of-the-art water treatment plant, which produces the best tasting tap water in the state,” Mr Hughes-Owen said.
Mr Hughes-Owen said that the water source and the treatment process all played a significant part in the water winning the state’s best tasting for 2021, but is also a testament to his fellow staff.
“This is really a great recognition of the hard work our operators in the Huon Valley area put in to ensure that the drinking water not only meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, but tastes good too!”
The Best Tasting Tap Water in Australia will be decided early 2022, which will then go on to represent Australia on the international stage.
