It’s been another massive year for the sector. From trailblazing innovations and major construction milestones to new challenges and investments, we recap your favourite content from the last 12 months.

The year just gone had its fair share of ups and downs, but while 2024 put our essential services to the test, utilities from all sectors weathered the storm (sometimes quite literally) and delivered on some truly groundbreaking projects.

We saw Queensland battle it out in Tasmania to claim the title of Australia’s best tasting tap water, met Jemena’s new Managing Director and welcomed a major investments from the Federal Government to support a renewable and sustainable future, but here’s what you thought were the biggest news stories in 2024:

  1. Milestone for Snowy 2.0
  2. $88.2M QLD pipeline project progresses
  3. Power restored as NSW battles extreme storm
  4. Contracts awarded for $3.3B SA Water capital program
  5. Sydney Water partners for $838M project
  6. South East Water awards contract for smart meter rollout
  7. Barwon Water to trial new wastewater treatment process
  8. Billions for Vic network reliability
  9. Fed Gov declares amended offshore wind zone in NSW
  10. Construction tender awarded for major Vic pipeline

But none of the fantastic achievements of 2024 would be possible without the brilliant leaders and innovators driving the sector forward. Over the last 12 months, we farewelled longstanding leaders and welcomed some bright new faces to the sector.

The top industry movements for 2024 were:

  1. New leadership at South East Water
  2. New Director appointed to Sydney Water board
  3. Hydro Tasmania welcomes new CEO
  4. Marinus Link welcomes interim CEO
  5. Key executive appointments for Endeavour Energy

In 2024 we shared some amazing insights, opinions and innovations from utilities across all states and sectors – and everyone we spoke to had some really valuable knowledge to share. While we’d be hard pressed to pick a favourite, here’s our most popular magazine articles for the year:

  1. Securing Central Queensland’s water future
  2. Leading the charge: large-scale BESS supporting renewables in WA
  3. Putting people at the heart of innovation
  4. Project EnergyConnect: successfully delivering ElectraNet’s largest transmission project
  5. Overcoming the odds
  6. Flipping the switch on CER
  7. A new era of hydropower
  8. Advancing customer outcomes by quantifying customer values
  9. Dam strong upgrades
  10. Building trust with smarter water

We also asked a range of experts for advice on some of the industry’s key challenges and these were your favourites:

  • Knowing the right time to repair
  • Streets ahead – fostering a culture of collaboration
  • From then to now: a trenchless transformation
  • Safeguarding our most precious resource
  • Partnering with industry experts

As we close the book on a bumper year, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2025. From all of us at Utility, we wish you happy holidays and a safe new year.
