A recent safety training day, delivered by Transgrid, has taught life-saving pole and tower rescue techniques to powerline technicians.

A team of contractors from New South Wales-based IT telecommunications provider, On The Wire recently travelled to Transgrid’s training facility in Western Sydney to complete a mandatory annual course, ensuring ongoing safe inspections of the electricity network.

Transgrid training delivery team leader, David Moore, said attendees participated in a simulated exercise on both a pole and a tower where they had to rescue a manikin or ‘unconscious fellow worker’ who slipped while inspecting high-voltage wires.

“Our employees and contractors are working hard every day to provide a safe, reliable and affordable energy supply for consumers,” Mr Moore said.

“Our 13,000km of high voltage transmission lines are powering more than three million homes and businesses.

“The safety and welfare of our people and the broader community is our highest priority. Our comprehensive training program is a key part of building the capabilities of our teams, injury prevention, and health and safety risk management.

“We were delighted to host the team from On The Wire at our Wallgrove training facility to undertake comprehensive training in pole and tower rescue. This mandatory annual training will ensure they benefit from the latest techniques and keep themselves and each other safe while working on our network.”

Transgrid provides safety and compliance training for employees and contractors including pole and tower rescue, substation structure rescue, low voltage rescue, CPR and the Power System Safety Rules.
