Unitywater’s $17 million upgrade to the Maleny STP and establishment of surrounding wetlands has been selected as a finalist in the 2015 United Nations World Environment Day Awards.

Formally opened at a 2014 public event, the upgraded plant uses a membrane bioreactor to treat effluent to a very high standard before sending it to an irrigated rainforest and wetlands in the Maleny Community Precinct to further disperse and remove nutrients.

“To be named a finalist in the World Environment Day Awards is terrific acknowledgement of the value this facility provides to the environment and community,” said Simon Taylor, Executive Manager, Infrastructure Planning and Capital Delivery at Unitywater.

“It also acknowledges the community consultation and partnership approach we took in its planning and building.”

The plant is a finalist for the Business Award for Best Specific Environmental Initiative.
