A $25 million upgrade on the Mudgeeraba Substation at Varsity Lakes has been completed by Powerlink Queensland.

“Mudgeeraba Substation and Molendinar together are the two main power supply hubs for the Gold Coast,“ Queensland Energy Minister, Dr Anthony Lynham, said.

“The upgrade supported up to 50 local jobs and has extended the life of the infrastructure in a safe, and cost-effective way.

“Importantly, after more than 40 years of service already, Mudgeeraba can now continue to provide a reliable electricity supply for many years to come as the Gold Coast grows.”

Work began in 2016 and involved an upgrade of primary and secondary systems, including installing a new 250MVA transformer to replace the old which was more than 40 years old. The works also included control building and fencing.

Powerlink Queensland Chief Executive, Merryn York, said that the team had focused on meeting deadlines and ensured that the major components of the upgrade were completed before the Commonwealth Games.
