Upgrade scheduled for QLD dam

Maroon Dam will soon be upgraded as part of Seqwater’s dam improvement program in South East Queensland.

The upgrade will be completed in two stages, with stage 1 expected to start in April 2014 and be completed by December 2014. Stage 2 is not expected until after 2025.

Stage 1 work will involve the extension of the existing weighting berm 30 metres downstream and extension of a grout curtain and foundation drains on both ends of the embankment. This work will improve embankment stability in the event of extreme weather such floods and earthquakes.

Construction will take place while the dam is operational and a management plan has been developed for construction works to ensure compliance with all relevant dam safety requirements.

Normal working hours will be between 7:00am and 5:30pm, Monday to Friday and 7.30am – 2.30pm on Saturdays.

During the stage 1 works, access to the dam site will be restricted to ensure the safety of construction staff and dam visitors.

Access to the lake and recreation area will remain open during upgrade works for permitted recreational activities; however, dam visitors are asked to be mindful of construction work and traffic movements in the area.

While construction impacts, including noise, dust and vibration will be mitigated where possible, Seqwater appreciates the local community’s patience while it makes these essential dam improvements.

The work is not anticipated to disrupt water supply or have any impact on water based recreation.
