The Victorian Government has welcomed a decision from the Federal Government to fund key Victorian environmental water projects that will secure water for floodplains, even in dry conditions.
The Victorian Government said that securing water for floodplains was what the Murray Darling Basin Plan was intended to achieve, and said that the funding from the Federal Government has signalled commitment to this objective.
The government said it accepts the federal legislation that is in operation, however it will continue to oppose buybacks and has not signed any agreement with the Federal Government in exchange for this funding.
The Victorian Government said it will continue to negotiate with the Federal Government to protect communities, farmers and the environment, and said it looks forward to advocating for Victorians at the rescheduled Water Ministers’ Ministerial Council.
