Close to $2 million will be spent by the MacKay council, QLD to upgrade local water and sewerage infrastructure within the area.

The council has approved Oceanic Constructions QLD’s tender of $1.7 million to upgrade two pump stations in the Marian Sewage network and JCQ Project Builders Pty Ltd’s tender of $425,000 to carry out remediation works to the Gargett and Sarina Reservoirs and the Nebo Road Water Treatment Plant.

Water and sewage portfolio councillor Frank Gilbert said it’s imperative that we look after and maintain our local assets.

“The Gargett, Sarina and Mt Pleasant Reservoirs all require concrete repairs to help minimise water loss and to ensure the asset’s optimal design life is achieved,” Cr Gilbert said.

“If our assets are left to depreciate it’s a huge financial and social burden on our community.”

The Nebo Road Water Treatment plant which supplies water to Mackay, Sarina and Walkerston is also included in the remediation package of work with refurbishment of two clarifiers to help maintain performance and capacity.

Cr Gilbert said a new sewage pump station needs to be built at Marian.

“The current sewage pump station at Paul Street in Marian is struggling to cope with the existing demand,” he said.

“A new sewage pump station at Paul’s Street and an upgrade to the existing pump station at Kenny’s Road will accommodate future growth in this area.”

Upgrading the sewer mains from these pump stations to the Mirani Sewage Treatment Plant is already underway with an additional investment of around $2 million.

The upgrades to the Marian sewer network is partly funded by the Queensland Government’s Royalties for Regions funding.
