City West Water will upgrade two 128-year-old water mains on major streets in North Melbourne to ensure continuation of a constant reliable water supply for the surrounding community.
The upgrades on the 300mm water main are taking place along Arden Street and Lloyd Street.
City West Water’s General Manager of Infrastructure and Delivery, Maree Lang, said the works on the historical water mains were essential to safeguard future water supplies to the precinct.
“The current water main along the corridor was constructed in 1889. It has served the community well but it is now in need of an upgrade to ensure it continues to operate efficiently in the future,” Ms Lang said.
“As Melbourne grows, more pressure is put on our water mains, therefore it is important that we do this upgrade now to prepare for the increase in population.
“We’re grateful to the community for their patience and understanding while we undertake these essential works.”
The upgrade will include some road lane closures to ensure the works can be carried out safely.
The works have been planned in consultation with community members, residents, business owners, City of Melbourne, Vic Roads, public transport operators and Bicycle Victoria, to reduce community impact where possible.
