Port Coogee (WA), developed by Australand, has been labelled as the 13th Waterwise Development within Western Australia.
The WA Minister for Water, Mia Davies, recognised the development for using best practice water sensitive urban design in its commitment to save water in the drying climate.
“Residents of Port Coogee are using significantly less water than the average household in Perth through waterwise design, water-efficient appliances and alternative water sources,” Ms Davies said.
Household gardens will be irrigated using a third-pipe scheme which delivers groundwater through a separate pipe in addition to traditional pipes which supply drinking water and remove wastewater from homes.
“Australand estimates households in Port Coogee that irrigate their garden using the third pipe scheme could use at least 20 per cent less water each year than an average household in Perth, which uses about 254,000 litres each year.”
The Waterwise Development Program, run by the Water Corporation in affiliation with the Urban Development Institute of Australia (WA Division) EnviroDevelopment Program, recognises the importance of designing homes and communities to be more water efficient.
The program offers developers, the building industry and new home buyers the opportunity to play an important role in conserving the State’s water supply.
