WA’s Western Power is offering $95,000 in grants to Western Australian Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades located within its network area, which stretches north to Kalbarri, south to Albany and east to Kalgoorlie.

Western Power’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Italiano, said individual grants of up to $5,000 would be allocated to eligible brigades for the purchase of equipment to help them prepare for the upcoming bushfire season.

“Volunteer firefighters sacrifice their own time and put themselves in harm’s way to help protect their local communities,” Mr Italiano said.

“The Western Power Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade grants are our way of showing our support and appreciation for their heroic efforts during bushfires.”

Western Power’s annual grants program has been running since 2007 and has allocated more than $640,000 to help metropolitan and regional brigades purchase vital equipment to assist their bushfire responses including, first aid equipment, water pumps and chainsaws.

”Everyone, including essential services, community groups and families, shared the responsibility of being prepared for the fire season and should know how to stay safe in an emergency,” Mr Italiano said.

“We have all seen the devastation caused by bushfires and that is why it is important for us to work together to prevent the outbreak of fire in our community.

“Western Power continually works to improve the network and keep vegetation away from powerlines to reduce fire risk. Also, our emergency response crews are on call 24/7 to assist during a bushfire by making the network safe for firefighters and the community.”

Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade funding requests are assessed by a panel including representatives from Western Power, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and the Association of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades.
