Rous County Council and Fraser Coast Regional Council went head-to-head for the Water of Origin title at WIOA’s 2024 Queensland Water Industry Operations Conference and Exhibition.

Held on 24 July 2024, the competition saw the 2023 winners of the Queensland and New South Wales best tasting tap water competitions face off for the Ixom Water of Origin title.

Fraser Coast Regional Council’s sample from Burgowan Water Treatment Plant put in a strong representation from Queensland, but it was ultimately the Rous County Council Nightcap Water Treatment Plant sample that claimed the title for New South Wales – with a margin of just one point.

The award for the Water of Origin was judged and presented at the WIOA Conference, which featured more than 100 exhibiting companies and attracted an estimated 700 attendees. The Water of Origin winner claims bragging rights over the other states for the next 12 months.

The competition has been running for eleven years and the current score is now seven to four, with New South Wales gaining ground against Queensland’s leads. –

The Ixom Water of Origin is a fun and exciting way to raise awareness of the quality of drinking water in both Queensland and New South Wales, and to recognise the efforts of local water service providers in delivering valuable water services to their communities.

Water samples are judged according to the Water Tasting Wheel, which outlines some of the attributes that water professionals use when judging water such as colour, clarity, odour and taste.

WIOA invites all water suppliers to participate in the competition in its search for the best tap water in each state and nationally.
