South East Water Lead Operator, Ben Evans, has been named the 2025 Victorian Operator of the Year by the Water Industry Operations Association (WIOA).

The award recognises Mr Evans’ outstanding service, leadership and dedication to the water industry across an impressive 37-year career.

South East Water said from his early days as a trainee with the Pakenham Water Board in 1988 to his current role as Lead Operator, overseeing six wastewater treatment plants, Mr Evans’ commitment to operational excellence and safety has remained unwavering.

A calm and capable leader, Mr Evans is known for his hands-on approach, extensive industry knowledge and willingness to go above and beyond to keep services running smoothly for customers and the environment – no matter the challenge.

South East Water Managing Director, Lara Olsen, said Mr Evans’ recognition is a proud moment for the organisation.

“Ben embodies everything that’s great about our organisation and our industry – reliability, teamwork and a deep sense of responsibility in delivering for our customers and community.

“He’s a mentor to many, a steady hand in a difficult situation, and a highly respected leader at South East Water. This award is a fitting recognition of his dedication and contribution over nearly four decades.”

Throughout his career, Mr Evans has championed continuous improvement, completing more than 40 industry training programs, from biological nutrient removal and algae control to frontline management.

Continuously optimising plant operations, he also keeps detailed diaries documenting procedures and incidents – resources that have become invaluable across South East Water’s treatment network.

South East Water said whether he’s isolating assets for safe maintenance, responding to emergency situations or pulling together the team for a Friday barbecue, Mr Evans’ leadership is grounded in people, safety and service.

Reflecting on the award, Mr Evans said it was a privilege to be recognised by his peers.

“I was very humbled by the win, and I feel very honoured,” he said.

“I would like to thank my Westernport Team and the Peninsula Team but also the great support we receive from Carolyn Madden, our Tech Support and Works and Services Team. It’s really a combined effort by all to keep these plants running smoothly with minimal issues.”

The Victorian Operator of the Year Award is presented annually by WIOA and sponsored by VicWater, recognising the best of the best among Victoria’s water operations professionals.

In addition to the prestige and recognition of being named the award winner, Mr Evans will also receive a professional development prize of an all-expenses paid trip to an overseas water conference.
