Yarra Valley Water has installed more than 50,000 digital water meters across its network.

According to Yarra Valley Water, customers already benefiting from improved water-use information as the utility continues the rollout across Melbourne’s northern and eastern suburbs.

Building on the strong results of its trial phase, Yarra Valley Water is continuing its phased upgrade across the network, with around 9000 digital meters now installed each month.

The utility said the digital meters have already helped identify more than 8500 leaks, saving 250ML of water – the equivalent of 96 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Yarra Valley Water Managing Director Natalie Foeng said positive customer experiences since the initial deployment demonstrate the organisation is now confidently progressing into full rollout.

“Digital meters give customers access to daily water-use information, helping them play an active role in managing their water and reducing waste and avoiding bill shock,” Foeng said.

“Our leak detection alerts mean customers no longer have to wait for their bill to discover a hidden leak. As soon as we detect unusual water use, we let them know so they can act quickly, saving water and money.”

Yarra Valley Water has partnered with Sagemcom and New Plumbing Solutions to deliver the upgrade and support deployment, with the program targeting more than 1 million meters across the service region.

Digital meters have already been installed in Box Hill North, Glen Waverley, Reservoir and Vermont South, with installations currently underway in Monbulk and Glenroy.

The program is set to expand into Whittlesea, Hume, Darebin, Merri-bek and Nillumbik later in 2026.
